Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, on official visit to India

Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs is in India on a four-day official visit from 17-19 February 2021.

The programme of his visit included the inauguration of the new Chancery and Residence at Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi along with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, bilateral talks with the External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar among others.

On his first day of visit to New Delhi, DPM Demeke addressed the India-Ethiopia Business Forum meeting jointly organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and the Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi. The Indian Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan also delivered his remarks at the Business Forum that was attended by several Indian companies with business interests in Ethiopia.

Speaking at the Business Forum, Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia Robert Shetkintong stated that there was a growing presence of Indian companies in Ethiopia.  He added that as of date, there are 607 registered Indian companies in Ethiopia employing 75,000 Ethiopian nationals.

Indian investments currently in Ethiopia in various sectors like agriculture and floriculture, engineering, plastics, manufacturing, cotton and textiles, water management, pharmaceuticals and healthcare stood around USD 5 Billion. Almost USD 3 Billion is estimated to be on the ground. A major portion of the investment of around 58.7% is in the manufacturing sector, followed by agriculture (15.6%).
