Congo will have a new prime minister. Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi appointed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde as Prime Minister. Sama Lukonde Kyenge, 43, was the General Director of the state mining company Gécamines (General Quarries and Mines), a flagship project before being appointed as the prime minister. He owed his earlier appointment ( June 2019) also to Tshisekedi .

Lukonde has ministerial experience also. He was also once a sports minister and a former party member of the ex-Katanga governor and wealthy businessman Moïse Katumbie, before switching allegiance to Tshisedi -led the party in 2018.

The largest country in sub-Saharan Africa with a turbulent political history, the DRC experienced its first peaceful presidential transition on January 24, 2019. Former President Kabila handed over power to former opponent Felix Tshisekedi, who was declared the winner of the controversial presidential election of December 2018. Analysts expect that with the appointment of the new prime minister, peace will return to the country known for the continuing turmoil. President Tshisekedi, by gaining majority in the Parliament will be able to nominate a cabinet of his choice.
