The Indian government has sought expeditious clearance for establishing the Embassy of India to Liberia. According to reports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also requested to fast-track the “Agreement” of its designated Ambassador to Liberia.
As a preparatory step for setting up Embassy, the Indian Government has withdrawn Mr. Upjit Singh Sachdeva, as its Honorary Consul General to Liberia. He was appointed Honorary Consul General of Indian to Liberia in 1998. He is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Jeety Trading Corporation-a premier dealer of building and household materials in the country. Vide a letter dated February 5, 2021 addressed to Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dee Maxwell Kemayah, the Indian government withdrew the Letter of Commission appointing Mr. Sachdeva as Honorary Consul with immediate effect.
The Government of India has been reportedly considering establishing its Embassy in Liberia for some time. The establishment of the Mission is expected to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations between the two countries. Without the presence of the Embassy in Liberia, Liberians had to get visas for traveling to India from Indian Embassy in Cote D’Ivoire.
