Protests broke out Tuesday (yesterday) in Sudan in the key port city of Darfur region and other parts of the country over the high cost of living. A expert team is now engaged in fixing the economy, which is decimated by decades of US sanctions, mismanagement and civil war under now-ousted president Omar al-Bashir. The country is facing galloping inflation, making essentials beyond the reach of the common man. There are also chronic hard currency shortages and a huge black market for currencies.

Demonstrators in Nyala, capital of South Darfur state, pelted stones at the police. They also set several shops on fire in the market places. Police fired tear gases at the protesters, who claim that inflation and scarcity of essential goods have made their lives miserable.

In many places, particularly in the Red sea city of Port Sudan, student protests broke out prompting the suspension of schools and closure of several shops. Protests over economic hardships have also been staged in recent weeks in the capital Khartoum and the eastern state of Gedaref. Sudan has been undergoing a turbulent transition time since the April 2019 ouster of Bashir following mass protests against his rule. The country has been facing economic hardships for quite some time.
