· According to media reports, the health minister, of Tanzania Dr Dorothy Gwajima, has stated that Tanzania has no immediate plan to import any of the COVID 19 vaccines.

The government would like to wait and watch until it is satisfied that the vaccines have been clinically proven to be safe.For the time being, Tanzania’s health ministry has urged its citizens to practice hygiene and use traditional medicine to treat Covid-19.

The country has a controversial history of managing the Pandemic. Tanzania imported a shipment of self-proclaimed plant-based novel coronavirus remedy from Madagascar on May 8, ignoring the WHO warnings that its efficacy was unproven. In a public address in the capital city Dodoma, President John Magufuli assured that the country would be Covid-free in mid-2020, saying God had answered the country’s prayers.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the head of World Health Organisation (WHO) in Africa, has urged the country to strengthen public health measures and tweeted that “Science shows that #VaccinesWork’ and advised the government to prepare for a Covid vaccination campaign.
