·      The National Ministry of Labour has announced the change in the official time of South Sudan from UTC +3 to UTC +2.

·      The resetting of the time by South Sudan will shift it from the East African time zone (GMT +3) – of Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti – to the Central African time zone (GMT +2).

The National Ministry of Labour has announced the change in the official time of South Sudan from UTC +3 to UTC +2. The Labour undersecretary Mary Hillary Wani Pitia said in a statement that the adjustment was based on South Sudan’s real location on the globe and to align it to the time zone based on its geographical location. The change pushes the country an hour behind its key trading partners Uganda and Kenya.

Basically, the resetting of the time by South Sudan will shift it from the East African time zone (GMT +3) – of Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti – to the Central African time zone (GMT +2). South Sudan now joins  the time zone of Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, South Africa and Egypt. The change was approved by South Sudan’s Cabinet only a fortnight ago but was severely criticized by citizens on social media.

Global time and Clocks are regulated by The Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) a global time standard that is often interchanged with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). If  there is no time difference between UTC and GMT, the latter is used in some European and African countries. Hourly offsets from GMT are used by most countries. Co
