Cyclone Eloise causes damages in Mozambique

The Cyclone Eloise happened over the last weekend in central Mozambique left 5,000 houses destroyed or damaged. Besides, the cyclone had left  over 7,000 people displaced. The Central Mozambique had to face the wrath of the cyclone twice earlier also in 2019. Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario visited the Sofala province and urged the inhabitants of the region to evacuate at the earliest since there  were  threats of further flooding and cyclone.

There was a landfall on account of Cyclone Eloise in the early hours of Saturday. Wind was blown at 150 km/h accompanied by torrential rains over the port city of Beira, near the Buzi district. It is reported that six deaths had taken place on account of the cyclone and a dozen people were injured. The extent of damages to properties including households is being assessed by authorities.

Jens Laerke, the spokesman of the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs said that the organization was responding to multiple needs in Mozambique including the conflict in Cabo Delgado in the north and the recent impact of Tropical Storm Chalane. He added that  more resources were urgently needed to scale up rescue works quickly to respond to Tropical Cyclone Eloise. Hundreds of people including children have taken refuge in schools were  in need of urgent provisions are needed.
