Participants in the inter-Libyan political dialogue Forum (LDPF) approved a mechanism to pick up the future leaders of the transition government between now and the elections scheduled for December. This was announced recently by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (Manul). The UN mission organized a vote during which members of the LDPF were invited to vote on the proposal. In the voting, 73% of the 75 Libyan participants of the LDPF had voted in favor of the mechanism. However, the communiqué issued by the UN did not provide details on the nature of the positions to be filled up.
In another meeting held recently in Hurghada (Egypt) between members of the Constitutional Commission, future Constitution was discussed as also composition of Parliament, the High Council of State based in Tripoli etc.. Libya has been plunged into chaos since 2011, after the fall of Colonel Gadaffi, the autocrat who ruled the roost in the country for long. Two rival authorities have been vying for power in the country since then -the United Nations-recognized Government of National Unity (GNA) in Tripoli and a parallel power center led by Khalifa Haftar, the strongman from the East. Marshal Haftar in April 2019 launched an aggression to seize Tripoli, which did not meet with success. Since then, the two sides concluded a ceasefire in October and returned to the path of dialogue, brokered by the UN.
