The Ugandan elections are over and the vote counting is on for the presidential and parliamentary elections. The initial results announced by the electoral commission indicate President Yoweri Museveni is leading handsomely over his arch rival Bobi Wine. But the
38-year old singer turned politician, who claims to have mass support, has termed the results are mere joke, alluding that the results are being vitiated by fraud and manipulation.
The latest figures show incumbent Yoweri Museveni has been maintaining a distant lead over rival Bobi Wine while 65% of the polling booths were counted. Uganda’s vice president Edward Ssekandi (78) lost in the Bukoto central parliamentary seat. He has been serving as vice president since 2011.
A spokesman for Uganda’s military said that armed forces have been deployed at Wine’s home to ‘provide him security’ cover. President Museveni’s tally stands at 62% when 50% of all votes counted, while Bobi Wine’s share is 29.3%.
Wine said the election was marred by “illegal, spearheaded by Museveni and his regime . The Electoral Commission hailed the vote for being calm and peaceful, while the internet and social media apps were still shut.
