A coalition of rebel groups were occupying two thirds of the Central Africa Republic (CAR) since December 19. They have been carrying out offensive attacks to disrupt the presidential and legislative elections held on December 27.
Bangassou, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has previously been the target of violent attacks. Back in 2017 the “anti-balaka” militiamen, drawn mainly from Christian communities, let loose brutal attacks on Muslim civilians. This has led to several deaths including that of 12 UN peacekeepers. Earlier, armed groups waged a dawn assault on the town of Damara, around 70 kilometres north of the capital Bangui.
Touadera is the favourite to win last weekend’s election. However, opposition groups have called the election results to be annulled mainly because of the limited coverage of the voting. The polling took place only in a fraction of the country. The results are expected on January 18.
