Chad Republic has put its capital N’djamena under lockdown for the first time since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It has also imposed a dusk to dawn curfew due to a rise in infections. This was revealed by Chad President Idriss Deby yesterday.
Chad so far has reported a relatively low number of cases. Only 2,113 Covid-19 cases were reported since March, and 104 deaths. Daily New cases fell into the single digits in early December. Now, there is an increase in the number of cases; but far below the daily cases reported in other parts of the world. The rise in numbers of infections, a double digit figure now, put the administration into a control mode. Most of the cases are reported from the capital city of N’djamena.
The lockdown imposed on the New Year’s day would last for a week. If the number of cases is not brought down, the lockdown could be extended further, the government authorities have said. Schools, universities, places of worship, bars, restaurants and non-essential public services will be shut down. The ban is also extended to congregation of people so that gatherings of over 10 people are banned.
