Some of the independent observers were also critical of the elections. They were of the opinion that far less people exercised their franchise in the election. Almost 15% of the polling booths did not see any polling. However, a government spokesperson opined that the elections were free and fair dumping the assertions of the opposition. The UN observers called for utmost vigilance to ward off any untoward incident. In the meantime, the UN forces regained the control of some territories, which were controlled by the rebels.
