There is a sharp escalation of violence prior to the election on December 27 in the Central African Republic as rebels seized the key city of Bambari. This was revealed by the local mayor and confirmed by the UN sources.

President Faustin-Archange Touadera has been trying to build support for him in the forthcoming elections. The developments have sent shockwaves to the present dispensation. Reports confirm that  fear has gripped the common man since they believe that close to the elections there can be violence let loose by the rebels.

Notwithstanding the tensions prevailing, President Touadera confirmed
that he would go ahead with the voting and urged people  to ignore
reports of a rebel advance. The rebels are backed by former president
Francois Bozize  for overthrowing  his government. His candidature was
rejected by the CARs constitutional court citing UN sanctions.
