Supporters of the National Democratic Congress, Ghana held demonstrations across the country yesterday calling for the results of the December 7 vote to be overturned. They shouted slogans for declaring the recently held election null and void.
Ghana’s election commission declared President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the election with nearly 51.6% of the vote. However, the result was quickly rejected by the loser and opposition leader John Mahama, charging the ruling party and president Akufo-Addo of rigging the election. It is the third time that the two leaders – Nana Akufo-Addo and John Mahama – are pitted against each other with the former winning all the times.
The ruling party and observers appointed by international bodies said that the vote was free and fair. Though the march was peaceful, some young men burned car tires prompting a brief confrontation with security forces. To restore normalcy, the army was called to help the police. Ghana is known for its political stability and strong democratic institutions.
