Ivorian President Allassane Ouattara, who was re-elected for the third time, has sworn at a ceremony attended by 13 African counterparts. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy also attended the function.
Taking umbrage under the revision of the Constitution in 2016, Ouattara and his supporters had argued that the term of office of the president was reset and his contest in 2020 should be counted as the first term.
Ouattara won with more than 94 percent of the vote cast. The opposition cried foul and announced a transitional government. This led to the arrest of several opposition leaders on sedition charges. There were reports about pre and post poll clashes among those who supported the President and those who were against, causing deaths and creating unrest in the country. Even now, the opposition parties have refused to accept his victory and blame the ruling party in rigging the elections.
