Liberia’s election results trickling in: Advantage opposition

Liberia has started announcing provisional results provisional results of the just concluded  special senatorial elections.  Four candidates from the opposition -Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) – have gained early significant lead over their nearest contestants from the ruling party. Analysts say that it might gain traction giving a big
blow to President George Weah’s ruling party – Congress for Democratic Change .Preliminary results from eight counties such as Bong, Nimba, Montserrado, Maryland, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Bassa, Margibi, and Gbapolu Counties were announced.

Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Davidetta Brown Lansannah, said  that the  Commission would  accurately announce the results of the election held in a free and fair atmosphere. Weah, a former football icon, could not do much in the economic front and faced severe criticisms from the general public.

The reports coming from Liberia indicate that the opposition is in a lead position in Montserrado, which is the largest county and is also the capital city.  The county has the largest concentration of people. Close to 2.2 million people exercised their franchise in their effort to select 15 senators. Along with the presidential election, voters also cast their opinions for referendums on reducing presidential terms and allowing dual nationality. The complete results are expected to be out in two weeks time. .
