US imposes additional visa restrictions on 15 African countries

·        The US has imposed additional restrictions on citizens of 15
African countries for entering the country. They will have to post bonds of up to US$15,000 to visit the United States

·        The new rule, termed as temporary travel rule, announced by the outgoing President Donald Trump will come into effect on 24 December

·        The new rules, couched as a six-month pilot project, is primarily to target those visitors, including businessmen   who overstay in the US beyond their visa period.

·        The new rule will be applicable to countries, such as Angola, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, The Gambia Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mauritania, Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde and  Burundi

President-elect Joe Biden is on record that he would overturn some of the decisions the Trump administration has taken over the last four year period. It has to be seen how the Biden Administration would react to such measures being taken at the last few days of the present administration. People in the know of things maintain that such rules, sometimes can take months and years to repeal once a decision is taken.

The outgoing Trump Administration has used immigration restrictions during the last four years to ensure more employment facilities to the Americans. Also, as reported by www.trendnafrica.com, the world is closely watching what would be the steps of the new administration regarding trade disruptions, restoring the US membership in the Paris Convention on Climate Change and the US policy towards multilateral organizations like WTO, WHO etc, which the Trump Administration threatened to pull out from. Recently, the Trump Administration has aborted a decision to pick up the Director General of WTO through consensus.
