An amount of €100 million ($117.2 million) aid to support Mozambique’s education, social action and health sector has been announced by the European Union (EU) to alleviate the impact of the Pandemic.  The agreement for a two-year programme was signed in Maputo.

The EU, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank  had suspended financial aid to Mozambique in 2016 after the Mozambique government failed to disclose external debt in excess of $1 billion. EU ambassador to Maputo, António Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, stated that the EU decided to resume the suspended aid in view of the adversities caused by the Pandemic. COVID 19 cases in Mozambique recorded 13,130, 94 deaths and 10,439 recoveries as on November 2. The deal has terms of transparency and monitoring of the utilisation of the fund. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world ranking 180th on the UN Human Development Index out of 188 countries.
