Sudanese farmers are finding strawberry cultivation lucrative and more are venturing into strawberry farming. Called as “red gold” the fruit cultivation is regarded as highly financially lucrative and high in nutritional value. Large scale cultivation can open avenues for its export to earn foreign exchange.
Though relatively new in practice, Sudan is said to have favourable climatic conditions for growing strawberry. It is reported that an acre of land can produce between 10-15 tons of strawberry fruits. Studies show that strawberries can be grown successfully in the State of Khartoum, the Eastt, the North and the West, in particular, the Marra Mountain district of Darfur. According to experts, the best variety that can flourish in Sudan is the heat-resistant variety known as ‘Festival California’ whose fruits are big, very sweet and have good international demand.
