Despite the pandemic,  Togo’s cereal production has increased.  For the fiscal 2019-20, grain output was estimated at 1.3 million tons. It was 7% above the average for the 2015-19.

Production of corn, which is the most consumed grain in the country, stood at  923,000 tons, which is 10% more than the average for the past five years.   The FAO report says that increase in the grain production was due to good rains and prompt supply of input by the state and private sector. This had a significant impact particularly in the Northern part of the country. In addition, the state also provided improved seeds, fertilizers and agriculture machineries.

Because of the increased agriculture production, official sources assert that the West African country did have only a minimal impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and assured that the current proactive policies would  continue to further boost the agriculture and processing sectors.

Despite that, the country is still depending on food grain imports. The FAO observes that Togo’s cereal imports demand in the 2019-2020 could be slightly above the average (280,000 tons) over the 2015-2019
