Thousands of Nigerians have been protesting across the country against police atrocities demanding the complete abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Though the authorities announced the immediate disbanding of a notorious anti-robbery unit, Nigerian protesters are continuing their campaign seeking justice for victims of police brutality and an overhaul of the security apparatus. The offer by the police to reform the unit has been rejected by the protestors.
Many continue to share stories online alleging extortion, torture, disappearances, and even murders at the hands of members of the unit using the #EndSARS hashtag. Protests have taken place in several cities in and outside Nigeria mainly against a notorious police unit, FSARS or SARS.
The Lagos House of Assembly passed a motion backing calls for SARS to be scrapped. President Muhammadu Buhari assured the protestors that he has advised the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to address the concerns of Nigerians about police brutality.
