Hostility between Algeria and Morocco is mounting with media and military joining hands in indulging in anti-propaganda against each other. According to North African media agencies, the international community and AFRICOM (Africa Command, responsible to the Secretary of Defense for U.S. military relations with 53 African countries) are closely observing the developments as it threatens their geostrategic interests.
It is alleged that the Algerian Army, which controls the reins of power in the country, is fuelling the hostility between the two countries. Algerian army’s latest monthly magazine, “El Djeich”, the Algerian Generals is a testimony of their deep-seated hatred and distrust with rhetorical attacks against Morocco and its territorial integrity. The Moroccan side claim that the Algerian Army, in its propaganda mouthpiece resort to baseless allegations of human rights violations challenging Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. It further alleges that Algerian news agencies and public media outlets play second fiddle to the Military. Moroccan side accuses direct involvement of Algiers in the Sahara conflict, violating the country’s Constitution. Extending unconditional support to the separatist group it says is a ploy to divert the internal public attention from its mismanagement.
