The World Trade Organization members have selected two final candidates to advance to the final round in the race to head the Geneva-based trade body. Sources quoted the names of Nigeria’s Ms Okonjo-Iweala, who also has US nationality and South Korea’s Ms Yoo as the contenders for the top post.

The Nigerian has had two spells as country’s finance minister and a short stint as foreign minister. She has been an economist at the World Bank and eventually rose to the position of managing director, the second in command at the institution. She has been an unsuccessful candidate for the top job at the bank.

South Korea’s Ms Yoo, the other woman candidate is a trade specialist. She was born the same year that South Korea acceded to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. She started her career in trade in the year the WTO was born, 1995.

She has been involved in some of South Korea’s key trade negotiations of her country including with China and the US and has deep knowledge and insight into the details of various areas of trade agreements.
