The Seychelles’ fisheries ministry is looking into the possibility of attracting industrial long-liners by improving existing port facilities for fishing. A recent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Seychelles approved the extension of the Ile du Port on the outskirts of the capital Victoria, to accommodate long liner vessels. The berthed vessels can also avail the associated land base facilities for net repairing and other type of related activities.
The ports in Seychelles are already saturated and with 40 long-liners operating from Port Victoria, as well as cargo vessels. Of late, the dynamics of trans-shipment of long-liners are gradually changing. The number of long lining ships, particularly fishing vessels coming to ports in the country for trans- shipment was coming down.
The government is also looking at expanding the net repair quay at the ports. Currently, the net repair quay at Ile du Port is 120 metres in length. The government has taken a decision to extend the port by 60 metres towards the sea and 120 metres towards land, which will give a total of 300 metres altogether, enough space for net repairing to help the fishing vessels.
