Ivory Coast inaugurated recently its new 60,000-seat Olympic stadium, built with the help of China, in Ebimpe, on the outskirts of Abidjan. The African Cup of Nations soccer tournament will be held there in 2023.
The grand ceremony took place in the presence of 50,000 people, including Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara. Incidentally, the president is seeking a third term in office, which has created consternation among the opposition parties. The Sino-Ivorian project is designed to create world class sports infrastructure in the country. The Ebimpe stadium is the largest in Ivory Coast.
The stadium will host the opening match and the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Soccer. The massive project with facilities like swimming pool and Olympic city, hotel etc was built at a cost Euro 218 million. China has also funded the project in a matching manner. China has a strong presence in Ivory Coast in terms of investment, particularly in the infrastructure sector. The project took four years for completion and the construction was carried out by China’s Beijing Construction Engineering Group, a Chinese firm.
