Mauritius ahead in AI Readiness Index

The latest report released by Oxford Insights “2020 Government AI Readiness Index”, places Mauritius as the highest-ranked African country on the list. Globally it occupies the 45th position among the172 countries. Five African countries have marked their presence in the list for leveraging technologies to accelerate economic growth with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The other African countries in the list include South Africa at 59th  Seychelles 68th, Kenya 71st, and Rwanda taking the 87th position.

The methodology adopted by the Oxford Insights include assessing the countries’ government’s willingness to adopt AI, and also supply of AI expertise and tools from the technology sector. Additionally, these tools should be based on high-quality and relevant data with the appropriate infrastructure to be used by citizens.

 Oxford Insights, reports that Mauritius maintained a lead in terms of AI as the only country on the continent to have published an AI strategy. It further appreciates the clear strategy adopted by Mauritius by setting up a council with the involvement of the private sector and academia. Richard Stirling, Oxford Insights CEO added that the proactive approach of the country to invest in the skills and plans on how that can be transferred back into the industry will play will further boost its AI strategy.

Mauritius is also rated high by Oxford Insights on this year’s Responsible Use Sub-Index

 that tracks the ethical use of AI in countries across the globe. The index measured primarily on inclusivity, accountability, transparency, and privacy. Mauritius ranked 13 out of 34 countries.
