The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority – UCAA has announced that six months after its partial shutdown, Entebbe International Airport will be reopened for commercial passenger flights from October 1st, 2020.It added that the nine airlines that are expected to resume business after the reopening of the airport included Uganda Airlines, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Brussels Airlines, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania and Ethiopian Airlines. As of now, only Ugandans returning home and tourists leaving or coming into the country will be allowed on the flights. However, the current arrangements for the handling of cargo, emergency, evacuation and repatriation flights will continue.
After the lockdown, UCCA’s revenue dropped by 50% to 1 billion Shillings against 20 billion shillings a month. The resumption of passenger flights is expected to improve the revenue inflows for both UCAA, airlines and other stakeholders particularly the tourism sector. The spokesman of Ugandan Airlines said that the airlines will ensure COVID-19 safety measures for airlines and crews such as wearing of face masks, regular disinfection of the aircraft, pre-flight tests, etc.
