Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has appointed political newcomer Mohamed Hussein Roble as the country’s prime minister. This decision has come immediately after brokering an agreement with regional leaders for elections next year that abandons a promised one-person, one-vote model.

Mohamed, nicknamed  “Farmaajo”, is likely to run for a second term as president,  competing against at least two other former presidents.

Roble studied civil engineering. He previously worked for the International Labour Organization. He will replace former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, who was voted out of office by parliament in July for failing to pave the way for fully democratic elections due before February 2021.

Earlier, one person one vote was applauded by the international community. However, it did not work well due to political infighting between the president and the country’s regional leaders.   This has led the government to postpone the application of the UN-backed model until after the 2021 elections.
