Mali’s military junta must name a civilian interim leader soon as the military chiefs meet with West African leaders who are also calling for fresh elections within a year. The 15-nation regional bloc known as ECOWAS gathered for a summit in Ghana, with its new president Nana Akufo-Addo as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com yesterday.
The regional arrangement has set an ultimatum for a return to democratic rule within a year and has called for a civilian to take the top job in the meantime. The military junta is arguing for an arrangement for an 18-month transition government but insisting that the interim president chosen to oversee the transitional government could come from the military. But the major opposition parties, which protested against the misrule of earlier dispensation has expressed its dissatisfaction about the arrangement, suggested by the military junta and said that it had gone against the will of the people.
The junta overthrew the government led by president Boubacar Keit on 18 August and kept the President and all other elected leaders under detention. Heavy international pressure is mounting on the Junta to return the power to the elected civilian government.
