South Africa’s Deputy President David Mabuza said the ruling party must rid itself of corrupt members. Many interpret his statement is an indication of his solidarity with the party’s anti-graft drive.
Supporting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s anti-graft stance, the Vice-President said South Africa’s governing party should take a lead in preventing corruption which is eating into the vitals of the country’s economy. The corruption tag, he said, is a bloat on the image of the party.
Ramaphosa last month said corruption in Africa’s most industrialized economy had become endemic in the 108-year-old party that led the fight against white-minority rule.
Graft flourished during the nine-year rule of Jacob Zuma. The government estimates that more than R500 billion (US$30 billion) was probably looted from state coffers during the period. Currently the government is probing suspect fraudulent contracts worth more than R5 billion for goods and services to tackle the Covid-19 epidemic.
