The 29th Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2022) in Cairo, was kicked off on 16th June with more than 3,000 high-profile participants including international bankers and officials.
Addressing participants at the official opening, Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) said that Russia’s attack of Ukraine has presented new challenges to Africa including a shortage of supply of grains, fertilisers and petroleum products as well as a galloping inflation at a time when most of the countries were just trying to recover from COVID. He observed that Afreximbank’s launch of a 4 billion dollar Ukraine Crisis Adjustment Trade Finance Programme for Africa (UKAFPA) was aimed at supporting countries to contain the short-term impacts of the crisis.
The theme of the conference was “Realising the AfCFTA Potential in the post-COVID-19 Era–Leveraging the power of the youth”. The Afreximbank annual meetings included Advisory Group Meetings and the Annual General Meeting of shareholders, complemented by seminars and plenaries.
The four-day event organised by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the annual meetings is also being attended by governors of central banks and heads of government in Africa, as well as representatives of regional and international organisations, atop of which the UN, the African Union (AU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
