Determined to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030, the Senegalese authorities are stepping up their cooperation on climate financing. Through its diplomatic representation, the British government has announced a £1 million package to support green growth in the West African country.
The funds will be used to build technical expertise to construct infrastructure for inclusive trade, sustainable waste management and the circular economy. This step places Senegal among the priority nations for the UK’s new public partnerships for sustainable development. Further funding is on the cards, particularly in the areas of energy and climate change.
This is part of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) signed by the State of Senegal to diversify its national electricity mix. This will be done through the UK-based investment agency FDS Africa.

Concrete projects are already underway in the land of Teranga to achieve this hoped-for sustainability. One example is the waste-to-energy initiative in the western town of Kaolack. It is being implemented jointly by the Senegalese National Electricity Company (SENELEC) and the Société nationale de gestion intégrée des déchets (SONAGED), with the aim of reducing pollution.
