Niger is in the world map for producing drones. For 10 years Abdoulaziz Kountché, an entrepreneur and grandson of General and former Nigerien leader Seyni Kountché has been in this business in the country. He founded Drone Africa Service, when drone technology was in its nascent stage.
Now, drones are not an unknown product in the region. Companies are using drone technology for a variety of purposes, particularly for security and disaster management operations like the flood management. Its use in agricultural purposes and in delivering things to inaccessible places including medicines is growing.
What Abdoulaziz Kountché does in Niger is designing drones and the parts such as hi-tech materials, like cameras, which are manufactured are brought from abroad. It also imports other items like resins, polymers. In countries where insurgencies are growing, drones have an import role to play in mapping and doing surveillance in the troubled areas. Drones have made it possible to monitor remote areas, where patrolling by security agencies is not possible because of the rough terrains, from where these insurgents operate.
Abdoulaziz Kountché is also designing drones to be used by the companies in their day to day operations. To promote drone culture in the country, he is also training more designers and is seeking to create a Drone Academy this year.
