Kenya Diaspora’s remittances from SA dip very low

Remittances by Kenyans living in South Africa have come down by 13 times over the past three years. This was mainly due to difficulties in getting work permits for skilled workers post Covid-19.  There is a long-standing visa row also between the two countries

Remittances by Kenyans living in South Africa have come down by 13 times over the past three years. This was mainly due to difficulties in getting work permits for skilled workers post Covid-19.  There is a long-standing visa row also between the two countries.

Official data show remittances from Kenyans working in South Africa have plunged to US$17.46 million in the year to February compared to US$228.68 million in a similar period three years ago.  Covid-19 travel curbs forced many Kenyans to return home.

The inflows have slid from a monthly peak of US $45.73 million (Sh6.13 billion under the prevailing exchange rate) in June 2020 to a measly US$708,000 (Sh94.87 million) in February as revealed by the   Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) data. There are also opinions expressed by the Kenyan diaspora that growing economic nationalism and aversion to hiring expatriates have contributed to the present state. There is substantial unemployment among black people in South Africa.
