In a bid to seek new energy resources, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck has embarked on a five-day trip to Namibia and South Africa in search of hydrogen. The disruption of Russian gas supplies has led to a crisis in energy security in the country. The visit of the Minister accompanied by a delegation of 24 German business leaders seeks to replace Russian gas with alternative energy resources.

Germany’s move to seek green hydrogen partnerships with Namibia and South Africa is to tap the vast natural gas resources which remain untapped across the southern African region.

The two countries’ gas industry sector has been rapidly expanding after the recent discoveries including TotalEnergies’ Luiperd and Brulpadda discoveries in South Africa and Namibia’s Venus and Graff discoveries, as well as the tremendous hydrocarbon potential in the Namib basin – offers a solution for Germany’s current energy crisis.

Gas exploitation and reserve expansion are top priorities for Namibia and South Africa to meet their electrification targets. Just energy transition in Europe and Africa can be driven by Germany’s investments in gas exploration in the high-prospect deep water and ultra-deep-water basins of southern Africa.

In Namibia, the delegation will sign an agreement on the production of green hydrogen.  Namibia’s Skeleton Coast on the Atlantic Ocean, he said is regarded as highly suitable for green-hydrogen production due to an abundance of sun and wind.
