Reports are pouring in that fighting continues in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite the ceasefire announced on March 3 in Luanda, which was accepted by all including M23 rebels. It is reliably known that fighting resumed between the army and the M23 on the northern and southern fronts in the province of North Kivu. This has left several civilians dead and injured. Both sides accused each other of launching attacks on their positions, violating cease-fire terms.
The DRC military spokesperson claimed that the M23 terrorists and their sponsors from the Rwanda Defense Force (the Rwandan army) launched an attack that targeted the Burundian contingent recently deployed as part of the regional force of the East African Community (EAC). The mortar attack had targeted a camp for displaced persons and the city of Mubambiro, causing “enormous damage.
However, the spokesperson for the M23, claimed that the Congolese army attacked its positions simultaneously and the violence is still continuing. It claimed that M23 had acted in self-defense, denying the charge that it had breached the ceasefire agreement.
